Belgravia

Situated south west of Buckingham Palace and bounded by Knightsbridge on the north, and Sloane street on the west, Belgravia is one of the most desirable, and expensive addresses in London. Which is unsurprising when you take its central location, grand architecture, elegant sweeping streets and landscaped garden squares into account.

This is where the world’s super-rich live – Saudi princes and Russian oligarchs, hedgefund billionaires, international bankers, embassy officials are typical residents – and the interiors of their homes match their sophisticated, international style. Furniture is either antique or hand-crafted, carpets are hand woven and the art on the walls is insured for high prices. Pimlico Road is home to many high end furnishing and antiques suppliers.

The best streets in which to live are considered to be Belgrave Square, Eaton Square, Chester Square, Wilton Crescent and Lowndes Square, where properties have white-stucco fronts, porticos and first-floor balconies. Previous illustrious residents include Mary Shelley, Lord Mountbatten and Margaret Thatcher.

The centre of Belgravia is Belgrave Square, which was built in the 1820s by Thomas Cubitt after he struck a deal with the Duke of Westminster. Houses here are grand terraces with some detached mansions. Eaton Square is larger but less grand, although houses still have four or five storeys with an attic, basement. The associated mews houses have mostly been developed into separate residences and offer a charming alternative.  Lowndes Square has some of the most expensive properties in the world (Roman Abranovic bought two houses here in 2008). Many of these have been converted into flats and maisonettes with lateral conversions ie across more than one house.

Although the Grosvenor Estate has sold many freeholds, it still controls the external appearance of terraces and squares and has prohibited modern development, so Belgravia remains unspoilt. The chances are that this quiet, salubrious neighbourhood with its crescents of white-stucco homes, will remain so for a considerable length of time.
