Mayfair

Property in Mayfair was built originally with the upper class in mind, and the district has always been a prestigious place to live. Unlike other areas of Central London, Mayfair never lost its affluent status, and although some of the original houses are now offices, embassies or corporate HQs, those that remain are furnished luxuriously, with opulence and fine quality informing interior design choices.

Mayfair sits between Oxford Street to the north and Picadilly to the south. Hyde Park is its western boundary and Marylebone and Soho are to the east. Much of the property and land is owned by Gerald Grosvenor, Duke of Westminster, whose ancestors saw the potential of what was an unpromising 500 acres of land and laid the foundations of the estate in 1677.

The most-sought after homes are in or around three handsome squares – Hanover, Grosvenor, Berkeley. These grand mansions were once occupied by wealthy English families and their servants, many of whom abandoned them after the Second World War. After a period of time as offices, these houses are now residential once more. Many have been purchased by an international clientele who occupy them occasionally and rely on the services of concierges when they are absent. There are smaller Georgian houses, too, although most of these have been converted into apartments, and sensitively-designed new developments.

Although Mayfair’s housing stock is among the most impressive in London, it is still has a villagey feel, albeit an extremely high-end village, with the village shops being Gucci and Hermes, and the village pub, Claridge’s. Elegant hotels, luxury clothes and jewellery shops, art galleries and top restaurants ensure that the most discerning individuals will continue to head here and look to invest in its property.
