Fulham

Sitting in a bend of the Thames and only four miles west from central London, Fulham is becoming increasingly affluent, with home-owners appreciating its variety of housing stock, lively street life and pubs, and riverfront location.

Until the 20th century, Fulham was largely a working-class area with a few pockets of gentility, notably around Lillie Road, Parsons Green and Eel Brook Common. During the 17th and 18th centuries it was a centre for pottery, tapestry weaving, paper making and brewing, with workers living in nearby artisans’ cottages. Brewing has taken place here since the Swan Brewery opened in the 17th century and its legacy is many pubs and gastropubs including the Lillie Langtry in Lillie Road which was built as part of the North End Brewery complex in 1835.

Much of Fulham’s historic architecture fell victim to war-time bombing and demolition. Despite this, housing stock in Fulham reflects its industrial past with many 19th-century brick town houses and workers’ cottages still standing. Once the homes of people working in Fulham’s many industries, they are now desirable properties that particularly suit families. Once occupied by several families, the present-day owners are single occupancy with many choosing to increase the size of their properties with extensions, loft conversions or extending into the side return.

The last decade has seen any evidence of industry along the riverfront swept away, and replaced by developments of new flats and riverside walks, making Fulham a hot property area.  With Sloane Square a stone’s throw away, the Hurlingham club on your doorstep and the delightful Bishop’s Palace gardens boardeing the Thames, it is easy to see Fulham’s lasting appeal.
